Ok..ive been looking at all the different threads on the wiper prob and i have decided to take my linkage out today and get it sorted as liast night driving home in the dark and rain my wipers stopped..even on top speed.got to be the linkage.

One question first, what is the best thing to regrease with as there seem to be different ideas on what to use...Im asking now as i am presuming that once you take the wipers off the car is undriveable.

We need to get this sorted as we are going away on thurs..gives me a couple of days to get the linkage off, clean and regrease then try and put it all back together without breaking/missing things.

Are there also any special tools i need apart from the customery hammer??

Just buy ordinary LM grease from Halfords or similar. Apart from the spanners etc needed to actually remove the mechanism all you need is some WD40 to soak into the spindles to try to free them off as much as possible. You will need your hammer or similar to drive them out -But be very carefuly - Leave the nut on the spindle and hit that - gently because if you damage the threads then you are is real trouble. If you can avoid hitting them by twisting and pulling the spindle all well and good. Once out they will need cleaning up andf all the gunge removing. You may need to use some wire wool or a pot scouer to clean them. Then apply the grease and re insert - you will then be able to judge if they are freed up enough.

After that re assemble and bob's you uncle.

Although it is not a job I have done personally, I would suggest a copper based grease such as "Copperease" for the spindles. The reason for this is that even if the grease washes away the copper particles in the grease will remain and should still lubricate the metal.

In addition to this, there should be a tube of copper grease in your toolbox along with you collection of assorted sized hammers.

Whatever grease you use - and I agree there is merit in the copper ease - you should be able to buy it from Halfords - usually in the brake section.

Halfords also sell copper or nylon hammers (I don't work for Halfords I 'm just trying to make this easy!!)

Get hubby to buy you a tool kit for your birthday! Ahh who was it said Romance was dead!!!

ruddy eck..how much for a hammer!!!!!!

lol, the reason for a copper headed hammer (you should be able to get one cheaper than that) is the copper is softer than the steel thread on the wiper linkage. So the copper will deform before the steel.

It is just a way of limiting the damage to components when you hit them.....

Well...i did get a big drill for my birthday last year with all the bits for it...dont think im gonna need it for this job though..(pity..)

Ah..you mean like when im putting a nail into a wall,,and the nail bends before the head of a hammer has any marks on it??this would be the other way round if a copper one.

Got it

don't use a copper & hide(nylon) hammer for nails B)

Even though my wipers still managed to get across the screen, when I took the linkage off one of the spindles was seized solid and I needed to add some heat to it to get it to shift. You might get away without heat but do not hit it too hard and make sure you have the nut back on to prevent damage to the threads!

Just a quick comment about what grease to use. Castrol LM is a good multi-purpose grease, but Castrol CL may be better in this application, as it is more water resistant.

well what i was doing was getting together the info i needed in one place....but im stuck.

i know i usually ramble to myself,,i just thought it would be easier to have it all in one place rather than several windows open..ill delete it all once im done.

I just cant get the motor unplugged..ive squeezed the tabs, wiggled and pulled..but it wont budge.

The plug has a sort of clip on it to one side - this needs to be released before the plug can come out.

They sometimes stick but with a bit of tugging etc it should release and then hey presto your cars in more bits than you started with!!

Ok..whole thing is loose...but i cant manoever it out..at the back there seems to be something black attached to the linkage which is i believe the cable for the plug...How do i manoever the linkage out without damaging anything?

You need to unplug it as you remove the motor and linkage out from under the scuttle, drape a couple of old blankets on the wing tops so you dont scratch the hell out of the paintwork as you carefully wrench it free :D
